How to Install Active Directory Domain Services on Windows Server 2012 R2

In this demo, you will also be creating a new forest and a domain controller!

 

 


 

1) Open up your Server Manager, Dashboard.

2) Click on Option, 2 - Add Roles and Features

3) This brings you to the Add Roles and Features Wizard

4) Read through the introduction of "what" the add roles and features wizard encompasses. Click "Next" when completed.

5)  Next choose either Role-based/feature-based installation or Remote Desktop Services Installation. In this demo, we'll be choosing the Role-Based/Feature based installation. Choose "Next."

6)The next page will allow you to choose the destination server. Select the server from the server pool which you will be utilizing

Choose Next.

7) Selecting Server Roles will be presented. In this example, we will utilize Active Directory Domain Services.  When clicking this role, you will be required to add additional features such as Remote Server Administration Tools. Choose to "add Features. We'll also be installing DNS on the same server in this example. Make sure to click on the "DNS Server." Role. You will need to install the DNS Server Tools. Click Next

8) The features that we needed were enabled when we clicked on the roles that we require. If there are additional features you'd like to add, add them now and then choose "next."

9) You will then be presented with Active Directory Domain Services. Review the introduction and choose "Next."

10) Your next page will be presented with DNS Server information. Review the introduction and choose "Next."

11)  You are then presented with a "Confirmation Page." Review your configuration and then choose "Install."

12) Once the installation has been completed, you will be presented with a "Configuration required. Installation succeeded on your server.

13) Click on the "Promote this server to a Domain Controller Option."

14) Click on "Add a New Forest."

15) Choose your Root Domain Name - in this example, I will choose AwesomeSauce.com. Click "Next."

16) On the next screen, Choose the Domain Controller Options. In this example, we will put our Forest and Domain Functional Level to Windows Server 2012 R2. Utilize a DSRM password and save it in a Network Password Manager application. Choose Next.

17) Additional Options will then be presented to you. It will verify the NetBIOS name assigned to the domain. Once completed, choose Next.

18) Specify the location of the AD DS Database, log files and SYSVOL. In this example i'll be keeping them as default paths, but best practice is to keep log files and database files on separate volumes. Choose Next.

19) You are then presented with a summary of your selections. Review the selections and once completed choose "next."

20) Now a Prerequisite Check Runs. Once Completed choose "Install."
